FINAL CALL FOR ABSTRACTS/FULL PAPERS

ISLAND TOURISM, DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT, GOVERNANCE INNOVATION

Islands constitute an indispensable core spatial carrier for the global cultural and tourism industry with diverse typologies. They encompass sovereign island nations such as Malta and Cyprus, numerous Small Island Developing States across the Pacific and Caribbean, as well as natural island forms including riverine islands, coastal islets and coral atolls, which have long maintained profound interconnections with tourism development. From a historical perspective, islands have served multiple functions including military garrisons, scientific test sites, commercial plantations and leisure resorts. Today, their comprehensive strategic value continues to rise. They act as frontlines for global climate change observation, pivotal hubs for national security and geopolitical development, key platforms for free trade port construction and characteristic resource exploitation. Meanwhile, islands are increasingly inhabited by Indigenous communities, digital nomads, and premium wellness tourism consumers.

Restricted by inherent geographical isolation, island tourism has long suffered from bottlenecks including constrained tourist mobility, poor operational efficiency and overcomplicated and ineffective governance. The emergence of digital technologies offers brand-new solutions to such challenges. In parallel, advancing digital transformation and establishing refined, modern governance systems have become core breakthroughs for the sustainable development of global island tourism and hospitality. This forms the contemporary background and practical motivation for this conference to conduct in-depth discussions around three core dimensions: Island Tourism and Hospitality, Digital Empowerment and Governance Innovation.

Boosting island economies through tourism development represents a universal growth pathway for island regions worldwide, and the tourism sector consistently acts as the primary engine for the initial take-off and quality upgrading of island economies. Currently, island tourism has entered a brand-new development cycle. How to drive industrial upgrading via digitalization and build an innovative and modern governance system tailored to island characteristics has become a critical agenda, awaiting joint solutions from academia and industry practitioners.
Centering on the three major themes above, this conference calls for papers from scholars, researchers, tourism industry experts and practitioners across Asia and the globe. Original theoretical research, quantitative empirical analysis, applied digital technology cases, industrial practical experiences and innovative tourism and hospitality management outcomes are welcome. The conference will invite authoritative experts from renowned international universities, academic journals, tourism and hospitality industries and government authorities to deliver keynote speeches, share cutting-edge academic findings and provide in-depth insights, building a high-level platform for communication and collaboration.
